Volcanology Mount rinjani

Mount rinjani caldera forming eruption is thought to have occorred in the 13th century, dated to spring or summer of 1257, this 1257 samalas eruption is now considered the likely source of high concentration of sulfur found in widely dispersed ice core. The first historical eruption occurred in September 1847.The most recent eruption of Mount Rinjani was in May 2010 and the most recent significant eruptions occurred during a spate of activity from 1994 to 1995 which resulted in the further development of Gunung Barujari. Historical eruptions at Rinjani dating back to 1847 have been restricted to Barujari cone and the Rombongan dome (in 1944) and consist of moderate explosive activity and occasional  Lava flows that have entered  segara anak lake. The eruptive history of Rinjani prior to 1847 is not available as the island of Lombok is in a location that remained very remote to the record keeping of the era. On 27 April 2009 Gunung Barujari became active, with activity continuing through to May 2009. The mountain was closed at that time as the eruptions intensified with plumes of smoke and ash as high as 8,000 m (26,000 ft). A Volcanic Explosivity Index 2 rating was issued for the activity between 2 May 2009 and 20 December 2009. The activity during this period was described as having the characteristics of central vent eruption, flank (excentric) vent, explosive eruption and lava flow

Getting to Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani is an active volcano located on a small island in Indonesia called Lombok. The easiest way to reach the mountain is to fly directly to Lombok International Airport ( LIA) or Lembar harbor, then taking a long drive to the foot of Mount Rinjani. This drive takes about 2.5 – 3 hours, going through Mataram capital of Lombok  and  It features long windy roads on cliffs with tons of wild monkeys ( pusuk pass) on the side of the road. Lombok  the best way is to transit through Jakarta & Bali. if you want easier you can take speed boat from bali ( padang bai or serangan harbor) direct to lombok  take 2 hours to teluk nare, bangsal or senggigi, you will drive to foot rinjani shorter 2 hours only.

Trek Map

The trek route : Senaru or Sembalun

1.If you want to summit in the 2Day/1Night  trip, then you would be going via Sembalun, which features an easier climb (mostly flat) through the grasslands to the base of the summit. The downside is that you would be walking under the sun the entire time.

2.If you are absolutely sure you will not  attempt to summit in 2D/1N, you should go through Senaru. This will take you through a steeper non-stop climb through the rainforest and a fairly difficult rocky climb in the last leg. But it’s a more beautiful and shaded route than Sembalun. You cannot reach the summit in two days if you go through Senaru

3.Personally I would not recommend attempting summit if you are doing a 2Day/1Night. While it’s possible, you would be very rushed and more tired since you will have to do a lot of climbing on the second day.

4.If you are doing a longer trek, maybe a 3Day/2Night  this is what most people choose, then you do not have to worry about choosing as you would be hitting both sides anyway. However, if you are wondering whether to start from Sembalun or Senaru, it probably comes down to when you want to summit. If you want to summit earlier in the trip, then choose Sembalun. If not then choose Senaru.

5.If you more longer trek you may start from sembalun then descend to senaru 4days/3 night, trek very slow and you will get summit and stay in lake segara anak longer, take bath in hot spring water.
